Spartan Women Finish Third with Three Event Wins, Men Seventh at DePauw Invitational

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Case Western Reserve University track and field teams competed at the DePauw University Invitational on Saturday, April 2 at Blackstock Stadium.  The Spartan women posted three event wins and were third of 12 teams with 111.5 points. The men were seventh of 11 with 32 points.

For the women, freshman Brooke Simpson (Solon, OH/Solon) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:39.65.

Freshman Thenessa Savitsky (Frackville, PA/North Schuykill) and sophomore Jenna Pansky (Parma, OH/Beaumont) were first and second, respectively, in the triple jump with marks of 10.69 meters and 10.42m.

Sophomore Emily Tran (Beaverton, OR/Southridge) won the javelin throw with a mark of 37.34m.

Sophomore Alyssa Harker (Mentor, OH/Mentor) was runner-up in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:10.03. Classmate Meghan Thommes (Hampshire, IL/Central) was fifth in the event at 1:11.46.

Two Spartans placed in the top five of the 100m hurdles. Junior Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon) was third in 16.28 seconds and classmate Nataija Brown (Cleveland, OH/Glenville) claimed fifth in 16.57.

Hollinger also landed a runner-up finish in the pole vault at 3.05m and tied for fifth in the high jump at 1.52m.

Junior Amanda Kline (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) was third in the shot put at 12.31m and fourth in the discus at 40.86m. Junior Leslie Stanard (Maple Heights, OH/Maple Heights) placed sixth in the 100m dash in 12.91 and 200 dash at 27.67. Freshman Gavriella Pora (Nampa, ID/Liberty Charter) placed sixth in the 400m in 1:03.77.

Senior Bettina Kaphingst (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) placed fourth in the 800m run in 2:25.94. Senior Alyssa Wozniak (Allison Park, PA/Deer Lakes) and Simpson were seventh and 10th, respectively, with times of 2:29.76 and 2:33.75.

Sophomore Corin Bowen (Midland, MI/Bullock Creek) was ninth in the 1500m run in 5:10.99. Junior Samantha Friedman (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) took 10th in the 200 dash at 27.90. Sophomore Clara Fitzpatrick (Ionia, MI/Ionia) tied for ninth in the pole vault at 2.30m.

For the men, junior Matt Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) finished third in the 110m hurdles in 15.03 and 400m hurdles in 56.71.

Sophomore Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) placed fifth in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:10.21 and 12th in the 800 in 2:05.29.

Three Spartans placed in the top 10 of the hammer throw. Senior Stephen Evankovich (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) placed fourth at 43.44m, classmate Eben Via (Evanston, IL/Taylor Allerdice) was fifth at 42.65m and freshman Harry Weintraub (Croton-on-Hudson, NY/Hendrick Hudson) was seventh at 42.23m.

Also posting top-10 finishes on the day was sophomore Cam Lee (New Brighton, MN/Irondale) was eighth in the triple jump (12.21m), junior Ty Shaffer (Myersville, MD/Middletown Senior) was eighth in the 400 hurldes at 1:00.22 and senior Jeremy Gdaniec (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) placed ninth in the discus throw at 39.76m.

The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, April 9 at the Marv Frye Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. Events are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. in Delaware.
