GAMBIER, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University track and field team split this past weekend at two different events, leading off with the Baldwin-Wallace College Mid-February Meet on Friday, February 11 and culminating on Saturday, February 12 at the All-Ohio Championships at the Kenyon College Athletic Center. Competing against some of the best competition in the state, the Spartan women finished fourth overall with 67 team points, while the men took ninth with a score of 35.
In the sprints, the men were paced by junior Matt Jurcak's (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) second-place result in the 55-meter hurdles with his time of 7.80.
Sophomore Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) highlighted the distance events, taking first in the mile with a time of 4:18.26 to score 10 points. The men's distance medley also took first overall in 10:19.02.
On the women's side, senior Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional), won the 5,000m run with her finals time of 17:39.58, out-pacing her nearest competitor by nearly 40 seconds.
The Spartans also took first in the women's distance medley with a winning time of 12:14.88.
Freshman Thenessa Savitsky (Frackville, PA/North Schuykill) was a winner in the triple jump, recording a distance of 35-00.25. In the shot put, junior Amanda Kline (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) placed third with her throw of 40-11.75.
At Baldwin-Wallace, Case secured five top-four finishes highlighted by sophomore Thea Emmons' (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) second-place finish in the 5,000-meter run in 19:30.02.
In the mid-distance events, senior Alyssa Wozniak (Allison Park, PA/Deer Lakes) paced Case with a fourth-place standing in the 800m run on the strength of her time of 2:29.19.
Freshman Corey Williams (Massilon, OH/Perry) also placed third in the 5,000m run in 16:25.56, leading the distance events.
Another freshman, Andrew Barnhart (Ligonier, PA/Ligonier Valley), placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 41-01.00 and also took fifth in the long jump with a distance of 19-02.75. Senior Jeremy Gdaniec (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) finished fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 50-09.00.
The Spartans will be back in action on Friday, February 18 at the Greater Cleveland Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College. The evening's events are slated to kick off at 5:00 p.m.
