DELAWARE, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University track and field teams were both in action on Saturday, April 9 competing at the Marv Frye Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan University. The Spartan women placed second overall with one NCAA provisional qualifying mark and three individual champions, while the men's squad took 10th overall at the meet.
Baldwin-Wallace College won the women's side with a team score of 111.50, defeating Case by just 12.25 points. Ohio Wesleyan, Capital University and Heidelberg University rounded out the top five. For the men, B-W also took first with OWU and Heidelberg in the top three. The Spartans placed 10th of 15 competing squads with 36 team points.
In the 100-meter dash, junior Leslie Stanard (Maple Heights, OH/Maple Heights) finished third overall in 12.95 and classmate Samantha Friedman (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) took sixth in 13.15.
Junior Nataija Brown (Cleveland, OH/Gleville) led Case with a sixth-place result in the 100m hurdles, recording a time of 15.78 as classmate Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon) took 10th in 16.28. Sophomore Alyssa Harker (Mentor, OH/Mentor) also turned in a fourth-place time in the 400m hurdles, placing third in 1:08.13.
In the 800m run, freshman Brooke Simpson (Solon, OH/Solon) and senior Bettina Kaphingst (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) placed sixth and eighth, respectively. Simpson crossed the line in 2:21.46, while Kaphingst was just behind in 2:22.91.
Senior Cindy Spahn (Wildwood, MO/W.T. Woodson) and Simpson also fared well in the 1,500m run taking third and seventh, respectively. Spahn ran a time of 4:52.06, while Simpson came in on her heels in 4:53.88. Senior Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) placed second in the 5,000m run and recorded an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 17:21.88. Sophomore Corin Bowen (Midland, MI/Bullock Creek) nabbed ninth in the same event, posting a time of 18:31.17.
In the relays, the 4x100 team placed sixth with a time of 50.35, while the 4x400 foursome finished eighth overall in 4:13.42.
In the field events, Hollinger scored a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a height of 5-01.25 and also placed eighth in the pole vault, ascending to a mark of 10-00.00. Sophomore Jenna Pansky (Parma, OH/Beaumont) earned top-10 finishes in four different events beginning with an eighth-place result in the high jump with a mark of 4-09.50. Pansky also took sixth in the triple jump with a score of 33-03.75, eighth in the javelin (94-09) and 10th in the long jump with her mark of 15-07.00.
Freshman Thenessa Savitsky (Frackville, PA/North Schuykill) finished first in the triple jump with a combined distance of 35-01.25. Junior Amanda Kline (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) was also a winner in the discus throw with a distance of 133-02 and the hammer throw with a mark of 152-09. The standout thrower also took runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 41-03.75. Sophomore Emily Tran (Beaverton, OR/Southridge) was a runner-up in the javelin with a finals mark of 122-08 -- just five centimeters from a school-record.
On the men's side, senior Bobby Voigt (Galloway, OH/Hilliard Darby) placed ninth in the 800m run in 1:59.34.
Sophomore Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) was runner-up in the 1,500m with his clocked time of 3:58.56. Case also got a pair of top-10 distance finishes in the 5,000m run from senior David Carter (Wadsworth, OH/Wadsworth Senior) – 15:38.77 – and junior Chris Wade (Berea, OH/Berea) – 15:42.52.
In the 110m hurdles, Matt Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) placed fourth with a time of 15:08 and also took 10th in the 400m hurdles with his time of 57.62. Junior Ty Shaffer (Myersville, MD/Middletown Senior) finished fourth in the same event in 55.44.
Sophomore Ben Yavitt (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) and freshman David Dixon (Atlanta, GA/Lakeside) both took top-10 finishes in the 3,000m steeplechase with times of 10:08.89 and 10:24.81, respectively.
Senior Jeremy Gdaniec (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) took third in the hammer throw (167-03) and 10th in the discus (132-04). Freshman Harry Weintraub (Croton on Hudson, NY/Hendrick Hudson) finished fourth behind Gdaniec in the hammer throw with a toss of 166-08.
Both teams will be back on the track on Friday, April 22 for the beginning of the 2011 University Athletic Association Outdoor Championships. Official start times are to be announced.
