Spartan Women’s Track & Field Finish Best-Ever Third, Men Fifth at 2011 UAA Outdoor Championships

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team rode three championship performances on day two at the 2011 University Athletic Association Outdoor Championships to a program-best third-place finish on Saturday, April 23 at the Woodruff Physical Education Center. The men's squad also picked up another individual champion and finished fifth at the meet.

In the meet's second day the Spartans were able to move up a spot from the day one standings after getting championship efforts from juniors Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon), Amanda Kline (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) and sophomore Emily Tran (Beaverton, OR/Southridge).

Hollinger put up a first-place finish in the high jump 5-04.25, while Kline recorded a championship performance in the discus throw 134-09 to go along with two second-place finishes from yesterday. Tran was also a champion in the javelin with a mark of 119-06

On the men's side, junior Ty Shaffer (Myersville, MD/Middletown Senior) was an individual champion in the 400m hurdles with a NCAA Provisional mark of 53.26.

Junior Matt Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) was also a standout in the hurdles, placing third in the 110m event in 14.84 and fourth overall in the 400m hurdles with an NCAA Provisional mark of 54.26.

In the field events, sophomore Cameron Lee (New Brighton, MN/Irondale) and freshman Andrew Barnhart (Ligonier, PA/Ligonier Valley) finished sixth and eighth in the triple jump with marks of 42-01.50 and 41-04.50.

Senior Stephen Evankovich (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) also earned eighth-place in the javelin throw with a mark of 141-02 and sophomore Izzy Budnick (Reiserstown, MD/McDonogh) was eighth in the discus with 126-01. Junior Jacob Miller (North Royalton, OH/St. Ignatius) scored for the Spartans as well with his sixth-place finish in the high jump (5-08.00).

Sophomore distance specialist Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) took home fifth in the 5,000m run with a logged time of 15:29.34. The Spartans also got points from the 4x400 relay squad of Jurcak, junior Michael Cohara, senior Bobby Voigt (Galloway, OH/Hilliard Darby) and Shaffer which finished sixth in 3:28.11.

On the women's side, freshman Thenessa Savitsky (Frackville, PA/North Schuykill) and sophomore Jenna Pansky (Parma, OH/Beaumont) finished 6-7 in the triple jump with distances of 34-10.25 and 33-08.00. Freshman Christina Tam (Trinidad and Tobago/Bishops) also placed fifth in the discus with a mark of 99-07.

In the relays, the 4x100 team of junior Nataija Brown (Cleveland, OH/Glenville), junior Samantha Friedman (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood), freshman Gavriella Pora (Nampa, ID/Liberty Charter) and junior Leslie Stanard (Maple Heights, OH/Maple Heights) took fourth in 49.82. Stanard also scored for Case with a third-place result in the 100m dash in 12.54 and again with a fourth-place finish in the 200m dash (25.88).

In the distance events, freshman Brooke Simpson (Solon, OH/Solon) and senior Cindy Spahn (Wildwood, MO/W.T. Woodson) placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 1,500m run with times of 4:49.96 and 4:52.00. Senior Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) also finished third in the 5,000m run, clocking in at 17:54.12.

A trio of Spartans scored in the 100m hurdles, as Hollinger, Brown and sophomore Valoryn Whitelock (Lexington, OH/Lexington) went 5-6-7 in 15.48, 15.68 and 15.76.

Sophomore Alyssa Harker (Mentor, OH/Mentor) and Whitelock were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 400m hurdles with times of 1:06.70 and 1:06.92. Senior Bettina Kaphingst (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) added a fourth-place finish in the 800m run with her time of 2:17.15. In the final event of the day, Stanard, Harker, Kaphingst and Pora secured a sixth-place finish in the 4x400 with a combined time of 4:08.33.
