Kanam Named Final UAA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for 2020

Case Western Reserve University senior Anthony Kanam was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for men's tennis, after going undefeated for the ninth-ranked Spartans last week with 5-0 record in singles matches and 4-0 mark in doubles play.

Kanam began the week with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Liam Spiegel in a 9-0 CWRU win over Ithaca College on Monday. On Tuesday, he helped the Spartans defeat 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 9-0 with an 8-6 win with Neil Mabee at second doubles over Sam Gibson and Jonathan Nottingham and a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Matthew Poh, and followed that with a 6-3 win at no. 2 doubles with Mabee over Gary Fishkin and Jacob Edelchik and a 7-5, 7-5 win against Edelchik at no. 6 singles to defeat Division I Lehigh University 6-1. Rounding out the successful week, Kanam picked up an 8-2 win at third doubles with Mabee over Daniel Trudell and Alex Lloyd and a 6-1, 6-1 win against Frank Stitch at sixth singles in a 9-0 win over Rhodes College, followed by an 8-3 win with James Hopper at second doubles against Jacob Niehaus and Trevor Vaccaro and a 6-0, 6-0 win at no. 5 singles over Vaccaro in a 9-0 win over Millsaps College.

Kanam finished the season with a 16-3 overall singles record, including a 14-1 mark in dual matches, and was 15-2 in doubles play, including a 13-0 mark in the spring. He currently ranks fourth in school history with 74 singles wins and tied for third with 82 doubles wins.

Case Western Reserve ended its 2020 season with an 18-1 overall record.
