No. 9 Men’s Tennis Set to Travel to Orlando for Spring Break Trip

The ninth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will travel to Orlando, Florida from March 8-11 for eight matches during the team's annual spring break trip. Two of the matches will be against nationally ranked teams, with another coming against a Division I squad.

The Spartan men enter their spring break trip with a 10-1 overall record in dual matches. Last weekend, the team won all three of their matches by 9-0 scores, defeating No. 34 Hobart and Rochester on Sunday, March 1 and Wittenberg on Saturday, February 29.

CWRU players have gone 122-37 (.767) in singles play and 72-18 (.800) in doubles play this year. Leading the team is the duo of first-year James Hopper and junior Matthew Chen, the top-ranked doubles team in Division III. Hopper ranks fifth nationally in singles competition and first in the Central Region, while Chen is 22nd in the national singles rankings and fifth in the Central Region Rankings. This season, Hopper is 18-3 (.857) in singles play, while Chen is 13-6 (.684). As a pairing, they are 20-2 (.909) in doubles play. Chen, who is eight doubles wins away from setting a single-season program record, is 6-0 in doubles play with other partners, and Hopper is 5-0 with other partners in doubles play.

The pairing of junior Jonathan Powell and senior Zach Hennessey is seventh in the Central Region doubles rankings, with a 6-4 (.600) record this season. Overall, Powell is 16-4 (.800) in doubles play and 5-1 (.833) in singles play. Hennessey is 12-4 (.750) in doubles play. Other Spartans with at least 10 wins include sophomores Aaron Umen (17-3 in singles play, 4-2 in doubles play), Max Vicario (12-2, 5-2), and Chaitanya Aduru (12-2, 6-2), and senior Anthony Kanam (10-3, 10-2).

On Sunday, March 8, CWRU will start the week with a pair of matches, facing Occidental and Hampden-Sydney at 11:00 a.m. Occidental, who will face Piedmont in Orlando the previous day, are 3-1 this season, while HSC is 0-3 this year.

In a match with importance for individual and at-large team selection to the NCAA tournament, the Spartans will take on No. 6 Wesleyan on Monday, March 9 at 3 p.m. The Cardinals, who have yet to play a team match this spring, feature two of the top 30 singles players in Division III in Noah Lilienthal (ranked 25th) and Zach Fleischman (ranked 30th). Lilienthal is also fifth in the Northeast Region, where Fleischman places 11th, and Zach Lieb places 16th. The duo of Lilienthal and Princeton Carter is seventh in the Northeast Region rankings as well.

The following day, the Spartans will face University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon, who is ranked 13th in Division III, at 11:30 a.m. and Division I Lehigh University at 7 p.m.

The team concludes the trip on Wednesday, March 11 with matches against Rhodes and Wheaton (Ill.) at 8:30 a.m. and Millsaps at 11:30 a.m.
