Chen Named UAA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Case Western Reserve University junior Matthew Chen was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for Men's Tennis after leading the ninth-ranked Spartans to three 9-0 wins last weekend.

Chen went undefeated over the weekend, finishing the three matches with a 3-0 no. 1 doubles record and a 2-0 no. 1 singles mark. On Saturday afternoon against Wittenberg University, Chen teamed with junior Jonathan Powell to claim an 8-2 win over Jake Stockhausen and Brayden Kopp, and then defeated Kopp in straight sets in singles play, 6-1, 6-3. During the Spartans' Sunday sweep of #34 Hobart, Chen and first-year James Hopper, ranked first in Division III, bested the 15th-ranked duo of Alan Dubrovsky and Walker Andrerson 8-4, and topped Dubrovsky (ranked 12th in the region) 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. He wrapped up the weekend with an 8-2 doubles win with Hopper over Rochester's Runjia Fang and Mark Zolotukhin in a 9-0 CWRU team victory.

Chen improved to 13-6 in singles play this season (including a 4-0 mark at no. 1 singles) and stands at 26-2 in doubles matches, just seven wins shy of the program's single-season record. This was his fourth UAA Athlete of the Week honor of the season and the sixth of his career.

The Spartans have won five-straight matches to improve to 10-1 overall this season. Case Western Reserve will travel to Orlando, Florida for its annual Spring Break Trip, playing seven matches over a four-day stretch from March 8 – 11.
