No. 9 Men’s Tennis Return to Cleveland for Three Matches this Weekend

The ninth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will be back in Cleveland this weekend, as the Spartans play host to Wittenberg University, no. 34 Hobart College, and the University of Rochester. The Spartans will host Wittenberg at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on Saturday, February 29 at noon, and then play Hobart at noon on Sunday, March 1 at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion and Rochester at 2:00 p.m. at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

The Spartans are coming off a 2-1 performance at the 2020 ITA Indoor National Championships, including wins over then no. 11 Kenyon and no. 9 Washington that led to a fifth-place finish at the elite tournament, and propelled the team up in this week's national poll from 12th to ninth.

The Spartans are 7-1 overall this year, with their only loss coming to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, ranked second nationally in Division III. CWRU is led in singles play by first-year James Hopper, who is ranked fifth nationally and holds an 18-3 record, and junior Matthew Chen, who is ranked 22nd nationally and is 11-6 overall. Sophomores Aaron Umen (15-3) and Chaitanya Aduru (10-2) have also reached the 10-win mark in singles play this year. In doubles action, Chen and Hopper are the top-ranked duo in Division III, and are 18-2 overall in doubles play. Senior Anthony Kanam and junior Neil Mabee are undefeated in doubles play this spring, going 5-0 together.

Kanam will enter the weekend tied for fifth in program history in with 66 career singles wins, and is two away from matching former Spartan Sam Concannon for the fourth most in team history. Kanam is also sixth in team history with 75 doubles win, followed by Chen in seventh with 74 victories and senior Zach Hennessey is eighth with 68.

Wittenberg stands at 6-1 on the season, and will enter Saturday on a six-match winning streak. The Tigers are coming off a pair of wins last Saturday, defeating Hope 5-1 and Earlham 5-0.

The Statesmen are 1-1 on the year, and will be opening their spring campaign on Saturday at Oberlin College. Hobart's lineup features senior Alan Dubrovsky, who is ranked 12th in the Northeast Region. Dubrovsky and junior Walker Anderson also make up the 15th-ranked doubles pairing in Division III.

Rochester is 3-3 on the season, and will be playing at Oberlin on Friday before taking on the Spartans on Sunday. Senior Yifan Shen has gone 8-5 this year, including a 2-1 record at no. 1 singles for the Yellowjackets, while senior Tanmay Thakkar is 9-4, with a 2-0 record at no. 2 singles.
