#12 Spartans Advance to Fifth-Place Match at ITA Indoors with 7-2 Win over #11 Kenyon

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked 12th in Division III, rolled to a 7-2 upset win over 11th-ranked Kenyon College on Saturday to advance to the fifth-place match at the 2020 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Indoor National Championships in St. Peter, Minnesota.

The Spartans, who improved to 6-1 overall, will face either ninth-ranked and fifth-seeded Washington University (Mo.) or 20th-ranked and eighth-seeded host Gustavus Adolphus College in the fifth-place match. The two schools will face off later today, with the winner advancing to face the Spartans. Kenyon, which fell to 4-2 overall, will take on the loser of the match in the seventh-place match on Sunday.

For the fifth time through six matches this spring, the Spartans swept through the three doubles matches to carry a 3-0 lead into doubles play. Senior Zach Hennessey and junior Jonathan Powell struck first at no. 2 doubles, defeating Pascal Lee and Thomas Kallarakal 8-2. Junior Neil Mabee and senior Anthony Kanam followed at no. 3 doubles with an 8-4 win over Evan Dean and Bryan Yoshino. At first doubles, the Spartans nationally top-ranked duo of first-year James Hopper and junior Matthew Chen overcame an early deficit to best Austin Diehl and Jacob Zalenski 8-6.

Sophomore Aaron Umen put the Spartans ahead 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lee at third singles, and sophomore Chaitanya Aduru locked the match up with a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles over Dean.

Powell added to the Spartans' advantage at fourth singles with a 6-0, 7-6 win over Kallarkal. Kenyon would get on the board with a three-set win from Diehl over Chen at second singles, 7-5, 1-6, 13-11, before Kanam picked up a 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 win at fifth singles. At no. 1 singles, Hopper fell to nationally sixth-ranked Zalenski 7-6, 7-6.

Sunday's match will be at 10:00 a.m. ET if against Washington or at 12:30 p.m. ET if against Gustavus Adolphus.
