Chen Named UAA Athlete of the Week for Men’s Tennis

After leading the 12th-ranked Spartans to three wins during their opening weekend of the spring season, Case Western Reserve University junior Matthew Chen was selected as the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for Men's Tennis.

Chen opened the season with wins in all three of his doubles matches and both of his singles contests during the weekend. On Friday night, in a 9-0 victory over the University of Northwestern Ohio, Chen teamed with first-year James Hopper to pick-up an 8-1 no. 1 doubles win over Marcos Salazar and Sergio Conde (the fourth-ranked duo in the NAIA), and went on to claim a 6-3, 6-2 triumph against Conde at no. 2 singles. In a 7-2 win over Rose-Hulman on Saturday, Chen teamed with first-year John Kasner to claim an 8-3 win at no. 3 doubles over Andrew Schiffman and Mark Slaninka. He wrapped up his weekend with an 8-0 win at no. 1 doubles with Hopper over Danny Kroeze and Jacob Burkett and a 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 victory over Burkett at no. 1 singles in a 9-0 victory for the Spartans against Hope.

With the wins, Chen improved to 9-4 in singles play this season and to 19-1 in doubles action. He is currently the 22nd-ranked singles player in Division III, and is part of the top-ranked doubles pairing, along with Hopper. This was his third UAA Athlete of the Week honor of the season and the fifth of his career.

The Spartans stand at 3-0 to open the campaign. Case Western Reserve will be back in Cleveland this week, facing Wooster and Oberlin at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on Friday, February 14.
