#12 Spartans Open Spring Season with 9-0 Win over NAIA #23 Northwestern Ohio

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked 12th in Division III, kicked off its 2020 spring campaign on Friday night with a 9-0 win over the University of Northwestern Ohio, ranked 23rd in the NAIA, at the Twos Athletic Club in Toledo, Ohio.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 1-0 on the season, while Northwestern Ohio dropped to 3-4 with the setback.

CWRU jumped out to a quick start in doubles play, with first-year James Hopper and junior Matthew Chen defeating Marcos Salazar and Sergio Conde 8-1 at first doubles. Senior Anthony Kanam and junior Neil Mabee followed with an 8-4 win over Diogo Lamy and Lars Kaplusch at second doubles, and in the third doubles match, junior Jonathan Powell and sophomore Chaitanya Aduru bested David Ayguavives and Malik Omarkhanov 8-7.

Moving to singles play, Hopper topped Salazar in straight sets at no. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Powell locked up the team with a 6-3, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Omarkhanov. Chen went on to secure a 6-3, 6-2 win at second singles over Conde, Aduru bested Kaplusch 6-4, 6-2 in the sixth singles match, sophomore Aaron Umen defeated Martin Stanchev 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 at third singles, and Kanam claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ayguavives in the fifth singles match.

The Spartans will wrap-up their opening weekend tomorrow with matches against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 11:30 a.m. and Hope College at 2:30 p.m., both in Holland, Michigan.
