Case Western Reserve University junior Matthew Chen and first-year James Hopper were named the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week, after winning the Division III doubles draw at the 2019 ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia last weekend.
Chen and Hopper, who were the third-seeded duo entering the tournament, went 4-0 against Division III competition at the tournament, defeating the top-seeded pairing from Williams in the semifinals, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 10-3, and the second-seeded duo from Redlands in the championship match, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (8), 6-4. The Spartans' pairing was finally defeated for the first time in the fall, falling to the JuCo draw champions from ASA Miami, 6-4, 6-4.
Chen and Hopper finished their fall with a 13-1 doubles record together.
Hopper also placed fifth in the singles draw at the ITA Cup, including a win over the tournament's top-seeded player, and ended his fall with a 16-1 singles mark.
This was the third UAA Athlete of the Week honor for Hopper this fall and the second for Chen. Chen has now garnered the UAA Athlete of the Week award four times over his career.
