Hopper & Chen Reach Doubles Quarterfinals at ITA Cup; Hopper Adds Singles QF Appearance

Play began at the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Cup on Thursday in Rome, Georgia, as Case Western Reserve University first-year James Hopper and junior Matthew Chen won a match to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles draw, while Hopper reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw, before suffering the first loss of his collegiate career.

Chen and Hopper, seeded third in the 16-team draw, picked up 6-1, 6-3 win over Johns Hopkins' Vishnu Joshi and Vikram Vasan on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament.

The duo improved to 10-0 on the season together.

Meanwhile, Hopper scored a major upset in his opening match of the singles draw, claiming a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win over Carleton's Leo Vithoontien, the top-seeded player in the tournament and 2019 NCAA Division III Singles runner-up.  In the quarterfinals, Hopper saw his career-starting winning streak come to a close, falling to Stanley Morris of Middlebury in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Hopper will continue play in the singles consolation draw.  He stands at 15-1 in singles play this year.

Play at the ITA Cup will resume on Friday, beginning with singles matches at 9:00 a.m., followed by the next two rounds of the doubles draw, starting at 1:00 p.m.
