Spartans to Send Six to ITA Fall Regionals; Others Head to Oberlin this Weekend

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will be sending six individual competitors to the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Central Region Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan from Friday, October 4th through Sunday, October 6th, with the rest of the squad scheduled to compete at the Oberlin Invite in Oberlin, Ohio on Sunday.

This year's version of the ITA Championship will feature smaller draws than past years, with no 'B' draw for either singles or doubles, significantly reducing the size of the field.  The singles draw will consist of 77 players with a consolation draw for players who suffer a loss in their opening match, while the doubles draw will have 39 teams with a consolation draw.

Full draws are available on the main tournament website at

Scheduled to compete in singles play for the Spartans are junior Matthew Chen, sophomores Chaitanya Aduru and Aaron Umen and first-year James Hopper, while Hopper and Chen and senior Zach Hennessey and junior Jonathan Powell will be competing for the doubles title.

Chen, seeded seventh, is the lone seeded Spartan in the singles draw, and will face Rose Hulman's Austin Perry in the round of 64 at 12:00 p.m. on Friday to open play in the draw.  Hopper drew Franciscan's Gary Pierre at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, while Aduru will face John Carroll's Gustavo Garcia at 1:30 p.m., both also in the round of 64.  Umen will play Denison's Jack Bulger in the round of 128 at 10:30 a.m., with his round of 64 match scheduled for 1:30 p.m. if he advances.

The round of 32 matches in the singles draw will also be held on Friday, with the round of 16 and singles quarterfinals scheduled for Saturday.  The singles semifinals are slated for 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, to be followed by the championship match at 1:00 p.m.

Both Spartan pairings will enter the doubles draw as no. 5 seeds.  Chen and Hopper will open play in the round of 32 after a bye, facing the winner of the first-round match between Wooster's Austin Hanna and Alon Liberman and Kenyon's Pascal Lee and Austin Burkhart.  Hennessey and Powell will also receive a first-round bye, and will face the advancing team between Illinois Wesleyan's Carter Burk and Demetrios Triantatel in the round of 32.

Round of 16 matches in the doubles draw will be played at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed immediately by the quarterfinal matches at 9:00 a.m.  The semifinals will start at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, with the championship match currently scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

Singles and doubles champions and runners up from both the singles and doubles draw will automatically qualify for the Division III ITA cup in Rome, Georgia from October 17th through October 20th.  The regional doubles and singles semifinalist with the highest national ranking last year will be eligible for an at-large bid to the event.

With the smaller draws this year, the rest of the CWRU squad will make the trip to Oberlin for their second competition there this season.  The event will feature a hidden dual format, with results counting for individual records, but not for team records.  The Spartans are slated to face Wooster at 9:00 a.m., followed by Oberlin at 11:30 a.m. and John Carroll at 2:00 p.m.

Recaps and results from both events will be posted to following the completion of completion each day.
