Chen & Hopper Lead the Way at Toledo; Maza Perfect at Oberlin

Case Western Reserve University junior Matthew Chen and first-year James Hopper were each named to the All-Tournament team at the Rocket Invitational in Toledo, Ohio, and first-year Diego Maza went undefeated at the Oberlin Invitational, highlighting another strong weekend for the Spartans during their fall season.

Hopper continued the strong start to his career, going 4-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles contests with junior teammate Jonathan Powell over the weekend.  He improved to 8-0 in singles matches and 7-0 in doubles action through the first two competitions of his career, most of which has come against Division I players.

Chen added a 2-1 singles record and a 3-0 doubles mark over the weekend, improving to 3-3 in singles play and 7-0 in doubles action to begin his campaign.  Sophomore Aaron Umen was also 2-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles matches at the Rocket Invitational.

The Spartans finished the three-day Rocket Invitational with a combined .632 winning percentage (12-7) in singles matches and a .818 winning percentage (9-2) in doubles play, despite facing a field consisting entirely of Division I opponents, including competitors from Toledo, Eastern Illinois, Youngstown State, Chicago State and Valparaiso.

Meanwhile, at the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio on Saturday and Sunday, the Spartans tallied a 14-9 singles record and a 7-5 doubles ledger.  First-years Michael Sutanto and Maza each went 3-0 in singles matches over the weekend, while Maza also teamed with senior Henry Squire to go 3-0 in doubles play as well.

Case Western Reserve will now turn its attention toward its final competition of the fall season, the 2019 ITA Fall Regional Championships, hosted by Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan from Friday, October 4th through Monday, October 7th.
