Case Western Reserve University freshman James Hopper was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for men's tennis, after winning the top flight at the Villanova Invitational with junior teammate Matthew Chen.
Hopper notched a perfect record during his first collegiate competition, going 4-0 in both singles and doubles matches during the weekend, while facing entirely Division I competition.
Hopper opened the weekend with a 6-3 doubles win over Saint Joseph's University's Nate Perrone and Francesco Mowrey, and then topped Mowrey 3-6, 6-4, 15-13 in the singles match. He then earned a 6-4 doubles win with Chen over Lehigh's Zack Elliot and Harry Wang, and bested Wang 6-2, 6-1 in singles play to advance to the next round. In the semifinals, Hopper and Chen secured a 6-1 doubles win over Villanova's Dylan Flanagan and Tommy Mulflur, followed by an 8-3 victory against Mulflur. He capped off his outstanding performance at the tournament with a 6-2 doubles win over Villanova's Tyler Roth and Alex Kim, and a 6-1, 6-2 singles victory over Kim, clinching the championship.
Hopper and the Spartans will return to action this weekend, as the team will be split between the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio and the Rocket Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.
