Chen’s Season Ends with NCAA Loss on Friday

The 2018-19 season came to a close for the Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team on Friday afternoon, as sophomore Matthew Chen suffered a loss to Amherst College's Sean Wei in the first round of the NCAA Division III Singles Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Chen fell in straight sets to Wei, losing 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 32.

The loss puts an end to a spectacular sophomore campaign for Chen, who became the first Spartan player to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships since the 2016 campaign.  He racked up 14 wins for CWRU, despite facing some of the toughest competition in Division III in the no. 1 singles spot, and added a 29-8 doubles record during the year.  Chen was also named to the All-UAA First Team earlier in the campaign.

The Spartans ended the 2019 season with an overall record of 21-9.
