Chen to Begin NCAA Singles Play on Friday

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Matthew Chen will begin play at the 2019 NCAA Division III Singles Championships, hosted by Kalamazoo College at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Friday, May 24th.

Chen, who is unseeded in the draw, will face Sean Wei of Amherst College (also unseeded) in the round of 32 at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.  The winner will advance to the round of 16 on Friday at 2:30 p.m. to face the winner of the match between fifth-seeded Jack Katzman of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Patrick Whaling of Gustavus Adolphus.

Winners from the round of 16 will move on to the quarterfinals on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., to be followed by the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.  The NCAA Singles Championship match is scheduled to be played on Sunday at noon.

Chen, an All-UAA First Team selection this season, finished the regular season with 14-14 overall record, including an 11-11 mark in dual matches.  He checked in at seventh in the Central Region in the latest NCAA rankings, and is the first Spartan player since 2016 to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships.

This will be the second meeting of the season between Chen and Wei, after the two previously faced during the teams' dual match against each other on March 15th in Orlando, Florida.  Chen came out of the matchup triumphant, defeating Wei in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
