Chen Selected to NCAA DIII Men’s Singles Championships

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Matthew Chen was selected as one of the 32 individuals to competing in the 2019 NCAA Division III Singles Championships, to be held at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan from May 24th – 26th.

This is Chen's first career selection to the NCAA Division III Championship field, and he becomes the first CWRU men's tennis player to earn a spot in the field since former Spartan C.J. Krimbill in 2016.  He was ranked seventh in the Central Region in the most recent rankings, and finished the year with a 14-14 singles record, including an 11-11 mark as the team's no. 1 singles player in the spring.

For the individual championships, the national committee selected seven singles players and three doubles teams from each of the four regions. Additionally, the committee selected the remaining four singles players and four doubles team berths from a national at-large pool. The individual championships consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.

The draw for the individual championship will be done by the men's tennis committee and will be released on May 23 by 1:00 p.m. Eastern time.  More information on the event will posted to athletics.case.edu leading up to the event.
