#12 Spartans Handle DII Walsh 8-1

The 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team rolled to a 8-1 win over Walsh University, an NCAA Division II program, on Thursday afternoon at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland, Ohio.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 16-8 overall, while Walsh dropped to 4-17 on the year following the setback.

CWRU swept the three doubles matches from Walsh on Thursday.  The third doubles pairing of freshmen Aaron Umen and Chaitanya Aduru were flawless in an 8-0 win over Filipp Kulynych and Clemens Wagner to put the Spartans ahead early.  Junior Anthony Kanam and sophomore Jonathan Powell followed with an 8-1 win at no. 1 doubles over Guilherme Carneiro and Joao Campos, and at second doubles, junior Zach Hennessey and sophomore Matthew Chen completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory over Jakob Riglewski and Tim Bruin.

In singles play, Aduru added to the Spartans' lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win at fifth singles over Alex Medina, and Powell locked up the win with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Kulynych at fourth singles.  Umen added a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wagner at second singles, Chen bested Riglewski at no. 1 singles in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, and Kanam picked up  a 7-5, 6-4 win over Dawson Drummond at third singles.  The Spartans' lone setback on Thursday was a 6-4, 6-3 loss by senior Rob Stroup to Carneiro at sixth singles.

The Spartans are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 20th against Hope College and the College of Wooster at 8:30 a.m. in Oberlin, Ohio.  Location and times of the matches could change due to weather.  Please check back at athletics.case.edu for any updates to the schedule as they are made available.
