Upset-Minded Spartans Head to Chicago to Face Two Top-10 Teams

The 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will travel to Chicago, Illinois on Saturday, April 13th for a pair of matches against top-10 teams in Division III, as the Spartans are set to take on eighth-ranked Washington University (Mo.) at 10:00 a.m. ET and the top-ranked University of Chicago at 4:30 p.m. ET at the XS Tennis Center.

Fans can follow the action for both matches with live results at https://athletics.case.edu/sports/mten/live.

Should the weather prevent any matches from being played outdoors, CWRU's match against Washington will be played indoors at Homewood Flossmoor High School at 10:00 a.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. match against Chicago, also at Homewood Flossmoor.

The Spartans will enter the weekend with a 15-6 overall record, and have won five-straight matches against Division III opponents, four of which have come against nationally-ranked teams.  CWRU is coming off a 7-2 win against 27th-ranked Kalamazoo College at home last Sunday.  The team has notched a .706 winning percentage in singles matches this year (149-62), while recording a .762 mark (99-31) in doubles play.  CWRU's lineup features two regionally-ranked singles players in 11th-ranked sophomore Matthew Chen and 16th-ranked junior Anthony Kanam, and two ranked doubles pairings in no. 4 Kanam and sophomore Jonathan Powell (16-8) and no. 13 Chen and junior Zach Hennessey (17-4).  Powell leads the team in singles victories with a 19-2 overall record and will enter the weekend on a 12-match winning streak, while freshman Aaron Umen has added a 14-7 mark.

Washington has won its last four matches to improve to 11-4 overall, and will have a Wednesday match at Division II Missouri-St. Louis before facing the Spartans on Saturday.  Washington features the region's top-ranked singles player in Ethan Hillis, along with ninth-ranked Bernardo Neves, 18th-ranked Daniel Li and 21st-ranked Benjamin van der Sman.  In doubles action, the Bears' duo of Konrad Kozlowski and Neves are ranked third in the Central Region.

The Spartans and the Bears last played each other during the 2016 season, when the two teams split a pair of matches, with CWRU winning 6-3 during the ITA Indoor Championships, and Wash U. claiming a 7-2 win in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

Chicago is 12-1 on the season, including a 5-0 mark at home, and will be hosting Augustana on Wednesday before facing the Spartans on Saturday.  The Maroons' lineup sports four regionally-ranked singles players, including sixth-ranked Erik Kerrigan, 10th-ranked Jeremy Yuan, 17th-ranked Charlie Pei and 22nd-ranked Alejandro Rodriguez.  In addition, Chicago features three ranked doubles pairings, including Yuan and Tyler Raclin (no. 2), Ninan Kumar and Kerrigan (no. 14) and Pei and Joshua Xu (no. 15).

This will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams, with Chicago claiming a 6-3 win over the Spartans during the ITA Indoor Championships in late February.

Full results and a recap of both matches will be posted to athletics.case.edu following the completion of competition on Saturday.
