No. 18 Men’s Tennis to Play Two Ranked Opponents in #32 Rochester & #36 Hobart this Weekend

The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will return to competition this weekend for the first time since their Spring Break trip to Florida, traveling to Rochester, New York on Saturday, March 30th for matches against the 32nd-ranked University of Rochester at 9:00 a.m. and 36th-ranked Hobart College at 2:00 p.m.

The Spartans stand at 12-5 overall on the season, and have claimed wins in their last two matches, including a 7-2 victory over then seventh-ranked Amherst College in Florida on March 15th.  CWRU is 2-0 in road matches this season and 9-3 in neutral-site contests.  As a team, the Spartans have notched a .706 winning percentage (132-55) in singles play and a .765 mark (91-28) in doubles contests.

CWRU has been paced at no. 1 singles by sophomore Matthew Chen, who has gone 10-8 in singles play this year, including a 7-5 mark in the spring.  Sophomore Jonathan Powell has won nine-straight matches and stands at 16-2 overall this year in singles play, while Rob Stroup is 15-7, and has moved into a tie with Josh Dughi for fourth in program history with 66 career singles victories.  In doubles action, the duo of junior Anthony Kanam and Powell has gone 14-6, including 6-4 out of the no. 1 doubles spot, while Chen and junior Zach Hennessey are 14-4, including a 7-3 mark at no. 2 doubles.

Rochester stands at 9-1 on the year, but suffered its first loss of the season in its last outing, falling 4-2 to Biola University, an NCAA Division II program.  The Yellowjackets are a perfect 3-0 at home this season, and have combined to go 57-35 in singles play (.620) and 32-12 (.727) in doubles action.  The team is led by Masaru Fujimaki, who is 12-4 overall in singles play this year, including a 6-2 mark in the lineup's top spot, while Runjia Fang has added a 4-2 mark at the team's no. 2 singles player.  The two have also combined to go 7-1 in no. 1 doubles matches this year.

Hobart currently stands at 5-2, and will play a Liberty League contest against Ithaca College on Thursday prior to facing the Spartans on Saturday.  The team is 0-1 this season in neutral-site contests.  As a team, the Statesmen have gone 51-30 in singles matches and 24-18 in doubles play.  Hobart is led by Alan Dubrovsky, the fifth-ranked singles player in Division III, who has gone 16-4 in singles contests this year.  Dubrovsky has also teamed with Walker Anderson to form the eighth-ranked doubles pairing in Division III, as the duo has registered a 12-6 record this season.
