The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked 18th in Division III, put a bow on its Florida trip on Friday, ending its Spring Break with a 7-2 win over seventh-ranked Amherst College and an 8-1 victory over Dickinson College at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The win over Amherst was the Spartans' third of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent, and the highest-ranked team that CWRU has beaten this year. CWRU improved to 12-5 overall on the season with the pair of victories on Friday.
CWRU's play at doubles helped the team get off to a quick start against Amherst, with the Spartans sweeping all three matches against the Mammoths. The Spartans' second doubles duo of sophomore Matthew Chen and junior Zach Hennessey defeated Sean Wei and Harris Foulkes 8-5. At third doubles, freshmen Chaitanya Aduru and Aaron Umen earned an 8-6 victory over Kevin ma and Damien Ruparel. The Spartans' first doubles pairing of sophomore Jonathan Powell and junior Anthony Kanam completed the doubles sweep with an 8-7 (6) win over Zach Bessette and Jayson Fung.
Powell would add to the Spartans' lead, defeating Ruparel in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, at fifth singles. Amherst would get on the board with a win at third singles, as Fung bested Umen 6-2, 3-6, 11-9, and Bessette set the score to 4-2 wityh a 7-6, 6-2 win over junior Sam Concannon at fourth singles. However, Chen secured the victory with a 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 win at first singles over Wei (ranked 18th in Division III).
CWRU added on to its margin of victory with wins at sixth and second singles. Aduru claimed the win at sixth singles, besting Foulkes 3-6, 7-5, 10-4, and Kanam earned a second singles win over Ma (ranked 25th in DIII) 7-6, 6-2.
Amherst fell to 5-2 with the loss to the Spartans.
CWRU and Dickinson played the doubles matches first in their match, with the Spartans sweeping all six in straight sets. At first singles, senior Rob Stroup defeated Leonid Sorkin (ranked 37th in Division III) 7-6, 6-2, and Umen claimed a 7-6, 6-3 win at second singles over Justin Pace. Freshman Max Vicario topped Sam Coan 6-,2 6-2 at third singles, sophomore Earl Hsieh earned a 6-2, 7-6 win at fourth singles over Joey Bolanos and sophomore Aris Jhaveri claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Derek Chen. Rounding out the singles sweep, junior Henry Squire defeated Bryce Perritt 6-1, 6-0 at sixth singles.
The two teams then moved on to doubles play, where CWRU picked up wins in the first and third matches. Aduru and Hsieh earned the first doubles victory with a 6-2 triumph over Pace and Chen, while Jhaveri and Squire topped Bolanos and Andrew Lai 6-2. CWRU's lone setback in the match came at second doubles, where Sorkin and Coan defeated Umen and Vicario 6-4.
The Spartans finished their 10-game Spring Break trip with a 7-3 overall record, going 45-14 (.763) in singles matches and 22-8 (.733) in doubles play. Powell led the Spartans with a perfect 8-0 singles record and a 6-2 mark in doubles play during the week.
The Spartans will be off until Saturday, March 30th, when the team travels to Rochester, New York for matches against the University of Rochester and Hobart College.
