Chen Named UAA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Matthew Chen was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for men's tennis, after going undefeated over the course of two matches on Saturday.

Chen won both of his singles and doubles matches during the 14th-ranked Spartans opening day of play during their Spring Break trip in Orlando, Florida.  Chen helped the Spartans to a 9-0 win over Scranton, opening the day with an 8-1 victory at second doubles with Zach Hennessey over Brian Harkins and Charles Swope, and following that with a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles over Tarquin McGurrin.  Later in the day, during a 5-4 loss to 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, he and Hennessey secured an 8-5 win at second doubles over Ray Boppana and Nicholas Calzolano, and then topped Daniel Levine (ranked ninth nationally) in three sets at first singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Chen improved to 8-6 overall on the season in singles matches, and to 16-4 in doubles action.  He is the first Spartan this season to secure UAA Athlete of the Week honors for men's tennis, and this marked the second conference Athlete of the Week honor of his career.

The Spartans stand at 8-3 overall on the season, and will continue their Spring Break trip with matches throughout the week in Orlando, Florida.
