#14 Men’s Tennis to Play Nine Matches in Seven Days during Spring Break Trip to Florida

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked 14th in Division III, will play nine matches in seven days in the Orlando area, including four against nationally-ranked opposition, during the team's Spring Break trip to Florida from March 9 – 15.

Case Western Reserve climbed to 14th in the most recent ITA/ Oracle National Rankings, after placing sixth at the ITA Indoor National Championships.  The Spartans will be returning to action following a near two-week break, and will carry a 5-2 record into the trip, including a 2-2 mark against teams ranked nationally.

CWRU has an overall singles winning percentage of .680 (87-41) this season, while the team holds a .775 (69-20) doubles winning percentage.  Senior Rob Stroup leads the team with 10 singles victories this season, while sophomores Matthew Chen and Jonathan Powell and junior Zach Hennessey each have a team-high 14 doubles victories.  Powell has teamed with Kanam to form the 25th-ranked doubles pairing in Division III this season, and the duo has gone 3-2 in doubles play during the spring, including a pair of wins against nationally-ranked competition.

The Spartans will open on Saturday, March 9th at 11:30 a.m. with a match against the University of Scranton (3-0), before facing 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University (4-3) at 7:00 p.m. in a rematch from the consolation semifinals of the ITA Indoor National Championships (the Spartans won the first meeting 5-4).  Carnegie Mellon's roster features three nationally-ranked singles players in seniors Chaz Downing (#7) and Daniel Levine (#9) and sophomore Ray Boppana (#49), and the nationally fifth-ranked doubles pairing of Levine and Downing.  Both of the matches on Saturday will be held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

On Monday, March 11th, CWRU will take on Millsaps College (6-0) at 11:30 a.m. at the USTA National Campus, before heading to Oak Street Park in Kissimmee, Florida to face Hampden-Sydney College (1-2) at 6:30 p.m.

Case Western Reserve will face its second ranked opponent of the trip on Tuesday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m., when the team matches up against 17th-ranked Trinity University (5-5) at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando.  The Tigers' lineup features the 30th-ranked singles player in Division III in junior Jordan Pitts, and the seventh-ranked doubles pairing of Pitts and senior Wilson Lambeth.

The Spartans will open play on Wednesday, March 13th at 8:00 a.m. against Austin College (1-2) at the Lake Eva Tennis Center in Haines City, Florida, and then take on 13th-ranked Kenyon College (6-0) at 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.  Kenyon is led by the nationally 20th-ranked singles player in junior Jacob Zalenski.

Play for CWRU will conclude on Friday, March 15th with matchups against seventh-ranked Amherst College (2-0) at 11:30 a.m. and Dickinson College (0-3) at 7:00 p.m., both at the USTA National Campus.  Amherst's lineup features 18th-ranked sophomore Sean Wei and 25th-ranked sophomore Kevin Ma, along with the 24th-ranked doubles pairing of Wei and senior Zach Bessette.  Dickinson is led by nationally 37th-ranked freshman Leonid Sorkin.
