No. 18 Spartans Finish Sixth at ITA Indoor National Championships

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked 18th in Division III, placed fifth at 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships, after suffering a 5-0 loss to eighth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in the fifth-place match at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield Village, Ohio on Sunday morning.

The loss drops the eighth-seeded Spartans to 5-2 on the season, while Gustavus Adolphus, seeded third in the draw, finished tournament play with a 6-2 overall record.

Gustavus Adolphus claimed wins in each of the first two doubles matches to finish, with Patrick Whaling and Chase Johnson topping junior Anthony Kanam and sophomore Jonathan Powell 8-2 at no. 1 doubles, and Yassine Derbani and Nick Aney defeating junior Zach Hennessey and Matthew Chen 8-2 at no. 2 doubles.  The Gusties completed the sweep of doubles with an 8-6 win at third doubles, as Michael O'Neil and Xavier Sanga defeated freshmen Aaron Umen and Chaitanya Aduru 8-6.

In singles play, Chen dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Whaling at no. 1 singles, and senior Rob Stroup fell to Aney at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-4.  The rest of the singles matches were left unfinished, with Sunday's matches at the ITA Championships only being played to decision.

The Spartans will be off for the next two weeks, before returning to action during in Orlando, Florida for their Spring Break trip.  CWRU will begin the stretch of nine matches in six days on Saturday, March 9th, with contests against Scranton, and a rematch against 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University.
