Men’s Tennis' Good Start Continues at Cincinnati & Oberlin

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team continued its strong start to the season, excelling during a pair of competitions this weekend – the Greater Cincinnati Invitational in Mason, Ohio and the Oberlin Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio.

The Spartans went a combined 34-18 in singles matches over the weekend, good for a .654 winning percentage, while going 12-7 in doubles play, good for a .632 mark.

The top of the CWRU lineup was in action at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational, where they faced mostly Division I competition.  Despite the strong field, CWRU players combined to go 11-6 in singles play and 6-3 in doubles matches.  Sophomore Jonathan Powell led the way for the Spartans at the event, winning his flight with a 3-0 singles record, and adding a 2-1 mark with junior Anthony Kanam in doubles matches.  Sophomore Matthew Chen and freshman Chaitanya Aduru and junior Sam Concannon and freshman Max Vicario each went 2-1 in doubles action as well, while Concannon, Kanam, and Vicario each went 2-1 in singles play at the event.

A pair of Spartans went undefeated in singles matches at the Oberlin Invitational, with freshman Kenneth Boyette and sophomore Austin Lawrence each going 3-0.  Juniors Zach Hennessey, Siddharth Rajupet, and Henry Squire sophomores Josh Hsia, and Aris Jhaveri and freshmen Varun Thachil and Aaron Umen each went 2-1 in singles matches, as CWRU players combined for a 23-12 singles record at the tournament.  The team also went 6-4 in doubles play, including 2-0 records for the duos of Thatchil and Hsia, and Stroup and Boyette.

Case Western Reserve will be off next week, before returning to action at the ITA Fall Central Region Championships at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri from September 28 – 30.
