CWRU Men’s Tennis Set to Open Fall Season at Kenyon

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will open its 2018 fall season this weekend at the Kenyon Invitational on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9 in Gambier, Ohio.

The Spartans are coming off a 17-10 campaign in the spring of 2018, finishing the year ranked 18th in the Oracle/ Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Rankings.  Case Western Reserve topped six opponents ranked nationally during the season, including a pair of wins over Swarthmore, ranked 19th in the final Oracle/ ITA Poll and a UAA Tournament win against Brandeis, which ended the campaign ranked 22nd.  The Spartans also placed fifth in the UAA during the campaign, going 2-1 at the conference tournament.

The 2018 Spartans are scheduled to return the majority of contributors from last year's team, after graduating just one player – James Fojtasek.  Top returners for the team include sophomore Matthew Chen, who played at no. 2 singles for the majority of the spring, All-UAA Second Team juniors Sam Concannon and Anthony Kanam, and All-UAA Honorable Mention junior Siddharth Rajupet.  Concannon led the team in singles victories last year, going 29-8 and falling one shy of the school's single-season record, while Kanam went 28-10 in singles play, and Rajupet ended the campaign with a 20-9 record.

Also returning is sophomore Jonathan Powell, who went 7-0 in singles play during his freshman year, including a 4-0 mark at sixth singles, and senior Rob Stroup, who was 17-13 during the year and enters the campaign ranked 11th all-time in program history in singles wins.  Junior Zach Hennessey was productive at doubles with a 20-5 record last year, including a 9-2 mark in the third position.  Junior Henry Squire and sophomores Will Grier, Josh Hsia, Earl Hsieh, Aris Jhaveri and Austin Lawrence are all veterans who can make an impact on the roster in 2018-19 as well.

In addition to the returners, Head Coach Todd Wojtkowski, now in his 11th season, has brought in one of the more talented classes in program history.  Among the freshman looking to make an impact during their first year on the team are Chaitanya Aduru, Kenneth Boyette, Varun Thachil, Aaron Umen, and Max Vicario.

After opening their fall season this weekend at Kenyon, the Spartans will continue their campaign next weekend, splitting the squad between the Cincinnati Collegiate Invitational from Friday, September 14 – Sunday, September 16, and the Oberlin Invitational on Saturday, September 15 and 16.  CWRU is slated to conclude its fall season at the ITA Fall Central Regional Championships in St. Louis, Missouri from Friday, September 28 – Sunday, September 30.

The Kenyon Invitational will feature 10 flights of singles and five flights of doubles over the two days of competition.  Singles draws will consist eight individual competitors, with the doubles draws each having eight pairings.  In addition to CWRU and Kenyon, other schools scheduled to compete include Walsh, John Carroll, Earlham, Denison, Carnegie Mellon, Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster.

Matches are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. each day.  Results from CWRU's matches will be posted to when they are made available following the completion of competition each day, with a final recap posted at the end of the tournament.
