#18 CWRU Men’s Tennis Seeded Sixth for UAA Champs; Will Open Play against #9 CMU


The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team was selected as the sixth seed for the upcoming University Athletic Association Championships, and will face third seeded and nationally ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Thursday, April 26th at 9:00 a.m. at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Spring, Florida.

The Spartans, who are also ranked fifth in the Central Region, will enter the conference championships with a 15-9 overall record and as winners of six of their last seven matches.  CWRU features a pair of regionally-ranked singles players in senior James Fojtasek (14th) and freshman Matthew Chen (22nd).

Carnegie Mellon has won five-straight matches to improve to 13-5 on the season, and is ranked second in the Atlantic South Region.  The Tartans' lineup features three regionally-ranked singles players in Daniel Levine (1st), Chaz Downing (6th), and Ray Boppana (11th), while the duo of Levine and Downing is ranked second in the region.

The winner of Thursday's match will advance to the semifinals on Friday, April 27th at 2:00 p.m. to face the winner of the first-round match between second-seeded and nationally third-ranked Chicago, and seventh-seeded NYU, with the losing teams facing off in the consolation draw, also at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. 

Quarterfinal matches on the other side of the draw include top-seeded and top-ranked Emory against eighth-seeded Rochester, and fourth-seeded and 10th-ranked Washington against fifth-seeded and 17th-ranked Brandeis.  The championship, third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place matches will all take place on Saturday, April 28th at 9:00 a.m.
