No. 20 Men’s Tennis Eyes Four Weekend Matches in Michigan

The 20th-ranked Case Western Reserve men's tennis team will head to Michigan this weekend for a stretch of four matches in three days, including three matches against regionally-ranked opponents. The Spartans will open their weekend at Hope College in Holland, Michigan on Friday, April 13th at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 14th, the team will play a pair of matches at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Michigan against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. CWRU will conclude the weekend on Sunday, April 15th at 31st-ranked Kalamazoo College 10:00 a.m.

The Spartans, ranked 20th in the latest ITA Division III Top-25 and fifth in the Central Region, will enter the weekend with a 10-8 overall record, including a 2-2 road mark and a 2-5 neutral-site record.  CWRU is coming off a 9-0 win over Franciscan last Sunday at home.  The Spartans have a .622 (158-96) singles winning percentage this year to go along with a .575 (77-57) mark in doubles play.

The Spartans are led by senior James Fojtasek, who is ranked 12th in the Central Region in singles play, while freshman Matthew Chen is the 19th-ranked singles player in the region.  The two also form the 15th-ranked doubles pairing in the region.  Sophomores Sam Concannon (22-7) and Anthony Kanam (22-8) are tied for the team lead in singles wins this season.

Hope currently sits at 5-8 on the season, including a 3-2 home record, and will take on Kalamazoo College on Tuesday, prior to facing the Spartans.  The Flying Dutchmen have won three of their last four matches.  The team has a combined .439 singles winning percentage (50-64) and a .462 doubles winning percentage (24-28).  Mark VanderStoep leads the team with a 9-9 singles record and a 10-8 mark in doubles matches, and Danny Kroeze has added an 8-9 mark in singles play this season.

Rose-Hulman is 10-7 on the season, including an 8-6 mark in neutral site matches, and is ranked 16th in the Central Region.  The squad has won two-straight matches and six of its last seven, and will face Millikin, Manchester and Wisconsin-Eau Claire prior to taking on the Spartans.  The Fightin' Engineers have a combined singles record of 70-44 (.614) and a doubles record of 32-25 (.561).  The team's top singles player is Ian Landwehr, who is ranked 24th in the Central Region and leads the team with a 14-3 singles record, all at no. 1 singles.  Andre Adam and Cam Metzger have combined for a 12-5 doubles record.

Kalamazoo, ranked 31st in Division III and seventh in the Central Region, is 8-6 on the year and a perfect 5-0 in home matches.   The team has won five-straight matches, and will face Hope, Wisconsin – Eau Claire and Calvin prior to taking on CWRU on Sunday.  The team is 62-41 in singles play (.602) and 31-21 (.596) in doubles matches this season.  The Hornets' lineup features Daniel Henry, ranked 22nd in the region in singles play and 14-5 in singles matches overall this year, while the duo of Henry and Tytus Metzler is ranked seventh in the region in doubles play.
