Case Western Reserve University sophomore Sam Concannon was named the University Athletic Association for men's tennis after going 2-1 in singles matches and a perfect 3-0 in doubles play during three matches over the weekend for the 20th-ranked Spartans.
Concannon opened the weekend by helping lead the Spartans to an 8-1 win at Haverford College, claiming a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win at fourth singles and an 8-5 win at third doubles with Matthew Chen. He also claimed a pair of wins against 21st-ranked Swarthmore College, defeating Josh Powell 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles and earning an 8-4 victory over Jiung Jung and Blake Oetting with Chen at third doubles, helping pace the Spartans to a 6-3 team win. Concannon and Chen completed their perfect weekend at doubles with an 8-4 win in the third match over Jon Heidenberg and Cameron Raglin of seventh-ranked Amherst, but Concannon fell to Kevin Ma 7-5, 6-1 at third singles in a 6-3 CWRU loss to the Mammoths.
For the season, Concannon leads the team with a 21-7 record in singles play, and has gone 15-9 in doubles matches. This was his first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor.
With the 2-1 weekend, the Spartans improved to 9-8 on the season. CWRU will be off next weekend before heading to Kalamazoo, Michigan for three matches on April 14th and 15th.
