No. 25 Men’s Tennis Returns to Action with Three Weekend Matches

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked 25th in Division III, will return to action this weekend with three matches in Pennsylvania, playing at Haverford College in Haverford on Friday, March 30th at 4:00 p.m., and then facing 29th-ranked Swarthmore College at 9:00 a.m. and sixth-ranked Amherst College at 2:00 p.m. in Swarthmore on Saturday, March 31st.

The Spartans will enter the weekend with a 7-7 overall record, and will be competing for the first time since their trip to California.  CWRU is coming off a 5-4 loss to 15th-ranked Trinity (Texas) in its last match.  Sophomores Anthony Kanam (20-7) and Sam Concannon (19-6) currently lead the team in singles wins, while senior James Fojtasek will begin the weekend with 59 career singles wins, one behind former Spartan Kyle Gerber (2009-13) for the fifth-most in program history.  As a team, Case Western Reserve has gone 141-89 (.613) in singles matches and 68-54 (.557) in doubles contest this season.

Haveford has won four-straight matches entering Friday's contest with CWRU, and stands at 6-2 overall, including a 3-0 record in home matches.  The team is coming off a 6-3 win over the College of New Jersey at home earlier in the week.  The team has a record of 39-25 (.609) in singles matches and 23-12 (.657) in doubles contests this year.  David Kong has seen time at various positions in the singles lineup, going 11-0 on the year, while the duos of Dais Nakayama and Kevin Yan and Rob Kresch and Ishaan Prinz have each gone 4-1 in doubles play during the spring.

Swarthmore currently stands at 4-7 overall, including a 2-1 home record, and will have a road match against Ursinus on Thursday before hosting the Spartans on Saturday.  The team is 34-34 (.500) in singles matches and 16-18 (.471) in doubles contests this year.  Mark Fallati leads the team with an 8-2 singles record (including a 4-1 mark at no. 1 singles).  This will be the second match of the season between Swarthmore and CWRU, after the Spartans came away with a 6-3 win over the Garnet as a part of the Stag-Hen Invitational on March 13th.  Fojtasek, Kanam, Concannon and sophomore Siddharth Rajupet all earned singles wins during the match, while Concannaon and Kanam and freshmen Jonathan Powell and Neil Mabee each claimed doubles victories.

Amherst recently rose to sixth in the ITA rankings, after opening the season with a 4-1 overall record, including a 3-0 ledger in neutral-site matches.  The Mammoths picked up wins in their first four matches of the campaign, but fell to third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 9-0 in their last match.  Included in the team's lineup is Sean Wei, who is ranked 22nd among Division III singles players.

Results and a recap of each match will be posted to following the completion of play each day.
