Fojtasek Named UAA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Case Western Reserve University senior James Fojtasek was named the Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the University Athletic Association, after going undefeated over two matches for the 25th-ranked Spartans and leading the team to a pair of victories on Saturday at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio.

In the early contest against the University of Rochester, a 9-0 CWRU win, Fojtasek teamed with freshman Matthew Chen to defeat Masaru Fujimaki and Peter Huang 8-1 in the no. 1 doubles match, and later topped Fujimaki in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, at no. 1 singles.  He went on to claim a pair of victories during an 8-1 win over #35 Hobart College, pairing with Chen for an 8-6 first doubles win over Alan Dubrovsky and Jonah Salita (ranked eighth in the Northeast Region) and a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 10-8 victory at no. 1 singles over Dubrovsky, ranked 31st in Division III and 13th in the Northeast Region.

Fojtasek improved to 3-7 in singles play and to 7-6 in doubles action with the wins on Saturday, and ranks sixth in school history with 56 career singles victories, and fifth with 71 career doubles wins.  This was the second UAA Athlete of the Week award of his career, after earning the honor last season on May 2nd.

The Spartans have won three-straight matches to improve to 6-4 overall in 2018.  Next up for Case Western Reserve will be a stretch of six matches in seven days during the team's spring break trip to California.  The Spartans will begin the trip with a match at Chapman University in Orange, California on Saturday, March 10th at 4:00 p.m. ET.
