Men’s Tennis to Begin Fall Campaign at Kenyon this Weekend

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, which ended the 2017 spring campaign ranked 15th in Division III, will embark on its fall campaign this weekend at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio on Saturday, September 9th and Sunday, September 10th.

The Spartans are slated to return 10 members of last year's team, which matched a program record with 22 wins for the second-consecutive season.  Among the team's top returners are senior James Fojtasek, who played at no. 1 singles last season and finished the season ranked 13th in singles play in the Central Region, junior and All-UAA Second Team selection (at no. 3 singles) Rob Stroup and sophomore and All-UAA Honorable Mention (at no. 6 singles) Sam Concannon

Another returning regular from last year's singles lineup is sophomore Siddharth Rajupet, who won 15 singles matches, while playing the majority of time at no. 2 singles last season.  Sophomore Anthony Kanam went 16-5 in singles action and 19-13 in doubles matches last year, and junior John Benedetto will return in the spring after winning 19 doubles matches last year.  Other returning veterans include junior Oludayo Areke and sophomores Zach Hennessey, Rajeev Laungani and Henry Squire.

In addition, the roster will be bolstered by nine incoming freshman players, including Matthew Chen, Will Grier, Josh Hsia, Earl Hsieh, Aris Jhaveri, Austin Lawrence, Neil Mabee, Jonathan Powell and Vivi Vemula.

After opening at the Kenyon Invitational, the Spartans will split the squad between the Greater Cincinnati Collegiate Invitational from September 15-17, and the Oberlin Invitational from September 16-17.  From there, the team will turn its attention towards the ITA Central Region Fall Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan from September 29 – October 1, with the winners of both the singles and doubles draws advancing to the Oracle Cup in Rome, Georgia from October 11-15.  Non-qualifying Spartans will complete the fall on October 7-8 at the University of Northwestern Ohio Invitational in Lima, Ohio.

Results from the Kenyon Invitational will be posted to following the completion of competition each day, and a full recap of the Spartans' performance at the tournament will be posted after its conclusion.
