#12 Men’s Tennis Takes Two from SUNY Oneonta

Case Western Reserve University, ranked 12th in Division III, made quick work of SUNY Oneonta on Saturday morning and afternoon, defeating the Red Dragons 8-1 in the first match of the day and 9-0 in the second contest, played at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on the Cleveland State University campus in Cleveland, Ohio.

The two wins raised the Spartans overall record to 14-4 on the year, while the Red Dragons fell to 4-5.

The two matches gave CWRU an opportunity to play 12 different players at singles, winning 11 out of the 12 matches.  The Spartans also featured six different doubles pairings, en route to sweeping doubles play in each of the contests.

Earning victories in doubles during the first match for CWRU were freshman Sam Concannon and Zach Hennessey (8-5 in the first match), sophomore David Zakhodin and senior Phillip Gruber (8-0 in the second match) and sophomore John Benedetto and Anthony Kanam (8-0 in the third match).  Adding singles victories were Concannon, Kanam, senior Fred Daum, Hennessey and senior Adam Collins.

The Spartans got doubles wins in the second match from the pairings of Zakhodin and Kanam, Benedetto and Gruber, and senior Josh Dughi and Daum, and followed by sweeping singles with wins from senior Kevin Dong, Dughi, Collins, freshman Rajeev Laungani, freshman Rohith Koneru and freshman Henry Squire.  Each singles win was in straight sets.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action next weekend with three matches at Oberlin College, starting on Saturday, April 8th with contests against Wheaton College (Ill.) and Wooster College.
