#10 CWRU Opens Spring Break with Wins over Hardin-Simmons & Schreiner

The 10th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team kicked off its Spring Break trip to California with a pair of wins, topping Hardin-Simmons University 7-2 and Schreiner University 8-1 in Claremont on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans have now won four-straight matches to improve to 8-2 overall on the season.

Case Western Reserve claimed wins in two of the three doubles matches in its early match against Hardin-Simmons, ranked 18th in the West Region, to take a 2-1 lead over the Cowboys.  Claiming wins for the Spartans were the no. 2 doubles pairing of seniors Fred Daum and Phillip Gruber, 8-6 over Chandler Livingston and Griffin Weinkam, and the no. 3 doubles duo of freshman Siddharth Rajupet and senior Adam Collins, 8-1 over Michael Boyd and B.J. Farmakis.  CWRU's lone doubles setback in the match came in the first match, with sophomores John Benedetto and David Zakhodin falling 9-7 to Alex Hunt and Andrew Eurek.

The Spartans' first two singles wins came from freshman at the bottom of the lineup.  At sixth singles, Rajeev Laungani extended the team's lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Eurek, and Anthony Kanam put the Spartans a win away from clinching the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.  Sophomore Rob Stroup secured the victory for the Spartans with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Weinkam at no. 2 singles.

Shortly thereafter, Collins added a point to the team score with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Farmakis at fourth singles.  The Spartans and the Cowboys split the final two matches, with Hunt picking up a 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 win over senior James Fojtasek at no. 1 singles, and senior Kevin Dong claiming a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Boyd at no. 3 singles.

Hardin-Simmons fell to 5-5 on the year with the loss.

In the second match of the day against Schreiner, the Spartans got off to a quick start by sweeping the three doubles matches.  At first doubles, Daum and Benedetto picked up an 8-6 win over Johnathan Christie and Nick Pena, Fojtasek and Gruber topped Joshua Newman and Isaac Vasquez 8-1 at second doubles, and Zakhodin and Kanam picked up an 8-3 win over Ryan New and Dayton Hancock at third doubles.

CWRU went on to win five of the six singles matches.  Earning straight set wins for the Spartans were Concannon at third singles, 6-3, 6-2 over Pena, Kanam at fifth singles, 6-4, 6-2 over Newman, and Laungani at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-2 over Luis Cabreja.  At first singles, Rajupet claimed a 7-6, 6-7, 10-3 win over Christie, while senior Josh Dughi earned a 1-6, 7-5, 11-9 victory over Hoanh Le at second singles.  The Spartans lone setback in the match came at fourth singles, where Collins fell in three sets to Nathan Torres, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

Schreiner dropped to 10-2 with Sunday's loss to the Spartans.

The Spartans will continue their Spring Break trip on Monday, March 13th against Vassar College in Claremont, California on the Pomona-Pizter courts.  The match is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. ET.
