Three Spartans Advance to Round of 32 at ITA Regionals

Case Western Reserve University senior Josh Dughi, and freshman Siddharth Rajupet and Sam Concannon each won a pair of singles matches during the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Central Regional Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan to reach the round of 32 of the draw.

Dughi, seeded ninth in the draw, topped Wittenberg's Caleb Astwood 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 128, and the picked up a 6-1, 7-6 (7) win over Owen Smith of Denison in the round of 64.  He will face DePauw's Gregory Frauenheim in the round of 32 on Saturday at noon.

Rajupet, seeded 17th, topped Augustana's Jack Morkin 6-0, 6-0, and followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jordan Greenwell of Wabash.  Next up for Rajupet will be the tournament's fourth-seeded player, John Carswell of Washington University (Mo.), at noon on Saturday.

Concannon added a pair of wins, upsetting 25th-seeded Dane Paulsen on Wheaton in the round of 128, 6-1, 6-3, and then claiming a 6-3, 6-4 win over Tyler Cole in the round of 64.  He will face Wash U's John Wu, seeded seventh in the draw, in the round of 32 at noon on Saturday.

Winning first round matches for the Spartans in singles play, but falling in the second round, were sophomore Rob Stroup, senior Phillip Gruber, and senior Fred Daum.

In doubles play, Dughi and Stroup claimed an 8-4 win over Wittenberg's Matt Arroyo and Timothy McNulty, and will take on ninth-seeded Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar of Chicago in the round of 32.  Rajupet and Concannon added an 8-6 win over Wabash's Andrew Denning and Michael Makio in the first round.

Action at the ITA Regional will resume on Saturday morning.
