#6 CWRU Men’s Tennis Seeded Fourth at UAA Championships

The sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team will head to Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida in quest of a conference title at the 2016 University Athletic Association Championships from Thursday, April 21st through Saturday, April 23rd.

As usually, the UAA Championships will feature one of the most competitive fields in the country, with each of the eight teams ranked regionally, and six of the eight ranked nationally, including five of the top-eight teams in the country.  A total of 14 regionally-ranked singles players and eight regionally-ranked doubles pairings are scheduled to compete during the weekend.

The fourth-seeded Spartans will open play at the tournament against nationally eighth-ranked and fifth seeded Carnegie Mellon University at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. The winner of the match will advance to play the winner of the match between top-seeded and nationally top-ranked Emory University and eighth-seeded New York University at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.

First-round matches on the other side of the draw include third-ranked and nationally Washington University (Mo.) against sixth-seeded and 23rd-ranked Brandeis University, and the second-seeded and fifth-ranked University of Chicago against the seventh-seeded University of Rochester.

Consolation matches between teams that drop their first-round matches will also be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.  The championship, third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place matches will each be contested on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

The Spartans, who finished fifth at last year's UAA Championships, will enter the tournament with an overall record of 18-6.  Case Western Reserve is ranked third in the Central Region, and features the region's top-ranked doubles pairing of seniors CJ Krimbill and Louis Stuerke, and regionally-ranked singles players in Krimbill (third) and junior James Fojtasek (12th).

Carnegie Mellon, ranked second in the Atlantic South Region, are 14-5 overall on the year.  The Tartans finished fourth at the 2015 UAA Championships, and feature regionally-ranked singles players in Abhishek Alla (fourth) and Dan Levine (seventh), and regionally-ranked doubles pairings in second-ranked Vayum Arora and Levine and 13th-ranked Jeffrey Chen and Kenny Zheng.

This will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams.  The squads previously met on February 21st in the third-place match at the ITA Indoor National Championships, with the Spartans pulling out a 5-4 victory.  In the match, Krimbill and Stuerke earned an 8-2 win over Arora and Levine at first doubles, and the Spartans went on to win four of the six singles matches, with victories from Krimbill (first singles), freshman Robert Stroup (third singles), Stuerke (fourth singles) and junior Kevin Dong (fifth singles).

Results and a recap of the Spartans matches will be posted to athletics.case.edu following the completion of competition of each match.  Fans can also follow the action with live twitter updates on the CWRU tennis account @casetennis1 and the UAA tennis account @uaatennis.
