No. 5 Spartans Fall to Pair of D-I Squads on Saturday

The fifth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team dropped a pair of close matches to NCAA Division I opposition on Saturday, losing to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) 4-3, before dropping a 5-2 match against Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

With the two losses, the Spartans dropped to 11-5 overall on the season.

IUPUI 4, CWRU 3
The Spartans pushed IUPUI to the limit in the first match of the day, but ultimately fell to the Jaguars, 4-3.

Playing by Division I scoring rules, the Spartans pulled out the point in doubles with wins in two matches, before play was stopped in the third.  At first doubles seniors CJ Krimbill and Louis Stuerke defeated IUPUI's Bradley Luetschwager and Kyle Whittaker 6-4, while juniors James Fojtasek and Phil Gruber picked up a 6-1 win over Matt Moe and Patrick McAuley at third doubles.  When play was stopped due to the doubles point being decided, freshmen John Benedetto and David Zakhodin trailed Jose Calero and David Beasley 5-4.

Case Western Reserve picked up wins in two of the singles matches, with a win from Krimbill at first singles, 6-2, 6-2 over Jac Newis, and a 7-5, 6-3 win for junior Kevin Dong at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-3 over Whittaker.  However, the Spartans would fall in each of the other four singles matches, allowing the Jaguars to pick up the team victory.

IUPUI improved to 6-15 for the season with the win.

Butler 5, CWRU 2
Krimbill and Fojtasek picked up wins in the first and second singles matches, respectively, in the Spartans' 5-2 loss to Butler in their second match of the day.

Krimbill bested Butler's Mikheil Khmiadashvili in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1, to cap off his 2-0 day in singles action.  Fojtasek added a three-set win, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 10-3, over Mason Dragos in the second singles match.

The two singles wins came after the Spartans dropped the doubles point to Butler, with Krimbill and Stuerke falling 6-2 to Khmiadashvili and Dragos at first singles, and Benedetto and Zakhodin dropping a 6-3 decision to Ari Gerstein and Alex Woldmoe.  Fojtasek and Gruber were leading Spencer Lang and Adrian Mag 4-3 when doubles play was stopped.

In singles action, Lang earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Benedetto in the fifth match, and Gerstein claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Stuerke at third singles.  After Krimbill's win in the top-singles contest, Mag clinched the match for Butler with a 6-2, 6-3 win over junior Freddy Daum.

Woldmoe added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dong at fourth singles to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 6-2, 6-3, before Fojtasek claimed the three-set victory to add the Spartans' second point of the match.

Butler raised its record to 6-8 on the year with Saturday's victory.

The Spartans are scheduled to be back in action next weekend, hosting their first outdoor match of the season against New York University at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2nd.
