CLEVELAND - The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team is set to host The College of Wooster (9:00 a.m.) and Oberlin University (2:00 p.m.) on Sunday, April 19 in conjunction with Senior Day as well a Rally for Inner City Tennis Courts fundraiser.
Drougas will earn his fourth varsity letter this year. He was named to the University Athletic Association second team in 2014 and 2013. In 2012, he was the UAA Rookie of the Year and he competed in the NCAA Division III Men's Singles Tournament. Drougas has 119 career wins and is the CWRU all-time singles wins leader (80). A 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete majoring in Marketing, Drougas was a candidate for the 2015 Outstanding Marketing Student Award. He also serves as the team co-captain.
Van Lent is currently 3-3 in singles during the 2014-15 season. Though he faced injury during the 2012-13 season, van Lent worked exceptionally hard to return the following season to post a singles record of 11-7 and 5-5 in doubles play.
Accompanying senior day is the ICTC fundraiser. Each year two players from the team step into a leadership role for community outreach. This year, Van Lent and junior Louis Stuerke (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) wanted to do something new.
Last year, the team wore pink shirts and participated in Rally for the Cure, but this year the Spartans men's tennis program decided to support a local non-profit and to raise awareness of a program in the community.
Inner City Tennis Clinics is based out of Thurgood Marshall on Hough Ave, a couple miles down the road. ICTC is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing urban youths with guidance, education and recreation during the summer months as a means to nurture their futures.
Many of the student-athletes on the men's tennis team have volunteered their time at ICTC during the past couple of years including sophomores Adam Collins (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and Gabriel Murcia (Akron, Pa./Ephrata Senior).
Players on the team will be selling the replica shirts that we will be wearing that support ICTC, as well as throwback shirts with the Reserve Red Cats logo.
After their matches this weekend, the Spartans will travel to Altamonte Springs, Florida for the University Athletic Association Championship from Friday, April 24 through Sunday, April 26.
