INDIANAPOLIS – The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team concluded its fall season at the 2014 USTA/ITA Central Regional Championship on Friday-Sunday, September 26-28.
The Spartans posted an overall mark of 47-30 during the three-day event, highlighted by a runner-up finish from juniors CJ Krimbill (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) and Louis Stuerke (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) in doubles competition.
Krimbill and Stuerke became the first doubles team in school history to reach the event championship match. The duo won its first five matches against teams from Otterbein University, the University of Chicago, Kenyon College, Washington University in St. Louis and Depauw University (Ind.). In a back-and-forth championship match, Krimbill and Stuerke fell to David Liu and Deepak Sabada from Chicago, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.
The Spartans' No. 2 doubles team, comprised of senior Will Drougas (Roanoke, Va./Salem) and sophomore James Fojtasek (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods), posted a 3-1 record to advance to the quarterfinals of the event. In reaching the the round of eight, Drougas and Fojtasek defeated Jeremy Bush and Ross Putterman from Washington-St. Louis, 9-8 (10-8). Last spring, Bush and Putterman reached the semifinals of the 2014 NCAA Championship before losing to CWRU's eventual national championship team of Krimbill and 2014 graduate Eric Klawitter.
In Group A singles, Drougas, Fojtasek and sophomore Joshua Dughi (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) each won their first three matches to reach the quarterfinals. Drougas was a straight-set winner versus Connor Sacks from Millikin University (Ill.), 6-2, 6-1, Quinn Jennings from Elmhurst College (Ill.), 6-3, 6-0, and Titas Bera from The College of Wooster, 7-5, 6-4.
Fojtasek scored wins versus Michael Selin from Chicago, 6-2, 7-5, Vitaliy Stadnyk from Earlham College (Ind.), 6-2, 6-1, and Jacob Huber from Kenyon, 6-1, 6-0.
Dughi followed up his 4-0 performance from the previous weekend at Purdue University with victories against Denison University's Jamie McDonald, 6-2, 6-0, Depauw's Christopher Bertolini, 6-0, 7-5 and Ohio Wesleyan University's Shouta Fukamachi, 6-0, 6-2.
With the fall season now in the books, the Spartans await spring competition beginning on January 31, 2015 versus Wabash College (Ind.).
