HOLLAND, Mich. – The No. 7 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, led by freshman Santiago Guerra (Midland, Mich./Herbert Henry Dow) with a perfect 3-0 singles record, posted a trio of victories during day one of the 2013 Hope/Kalamazoo Shootout.
Playing all matches at Hope College, the Spartans opened the day with a 9-0 sweep versus Ohio Northern University, then recorded a 7-2 win versus host Hope, and closed the day with a 9-0 victory versus Elmhurst College (Ill.) at the DeWitt Tennis Center.
With the victories, the Spartans, also ranked No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central region, improve to 9-0 in dual matches.
With three matches in a short amount of time, the Spartans mixed and matched their lineup throughout the day. In the opening match with the Polar Bears, Case picked up points from the No. 1 doubles duo of juniors John Healey (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and Eric Klawitter (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) by an 8-1 score. The No 2 tandem of seniors Richard Brunsting (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and Alex Solove (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) as well as the No. 3 team of sophomore Will Drougas (Roanoke, Va./Salem) and senior Kyle Gerber (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) were victorious by identical 8-4 tallies.
In singles action, the Spartans picked up all six points in straight sets lead by Drougas at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1), freshman Christopher Krimbill (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2) and Klawitter, the region's No. 15 ranked player, at No. 3 (6-2, 6-1). Rounding out the lineup were freshmen Harrison Smith (Knoxville, Tenn./West) at No. 4 (6-2, 6-2), Viswajit Simhadri (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook) at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1) and Guerra at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1).
In the middle match against the Flying Dutch, the hosts grabbed the point at No. 1 doubles before the teams of junior Ben McClarren (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Solove at No. 2 along with freshman Louis Stuerke (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) and Brunsting at No. 3 gave the visitors a 2-1 edge headed into singles by scores of 8-2 and 8-4, respectively.
During singles play, Hope tied the match at 2-2 with a win in the top slot, but the Spartans rebounded with five-consecutive straight-set victories. Junior Derek Reinbold (Carmel, Ind./Park Tudor) won at No. 2 (6-2, 6-1), Simhadri at No. 3 (7-5, 6-4), Smith at No. 4 (6-2, 6-3), Guerra at No. 5 (6-2, 6-2) and freshman Samuel Shi (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2).
Wrapping up the day versus Elmhurst, Healey and Krimbill started the match with a 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles, while the duos of Gerber and Klawitter at No. 2 and Brunsting and Solove at No. 3 gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead headed into singles with 8-0 and 8-2 wins, respectively.
In singles, Krimbill became a double winner with a 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, while Gerber, the region's No. 7 player, posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2. Klawitter joined Krimbill as a double winner via his 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3, while Healey cruised at No. 4 by a 6-1, 6-1 tally. Reinbold moved his record to 2-0 for the day with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 5, and Guerra remained unblemished for the day with his 6-2, 6-3 victory in the final slot.
The Spartans will remain at Hope on Saturday and battle Luther College (Iowa) at 9:00 a.m. before traveling to nearby Kalamazoo College to conclude the two-day event with a 5:00 p.m. match versus the host Hornets.
