GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The No. 17 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team continued its early-season tear through the NCAA Division III Top 30 with a 6-3 victory at No. 28 DePauw University on Friday evening at the Lilly Center.
The Spartans (4-0) now have three wins versus nationally-ranked opponents during the first two weekends of the season and will return to action on Saturday, February 23 versus No. 29 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 2:00 p.m. on the campus of DePauw.
In doubles play, the Spartans grabbed a 2-1 advantage beginning with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 by senior Nicolas Howe (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) and junior John Healey (Columbia, Md./Atholton) versus Sam Miles and Ben Kopecky.
The Tigers (1-2) claimed the point at No. 2, but the Spartans won at No. 3, 8-6, as the duo of seniors Alex Solove (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and Richard Brunsting (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) defeated Andrew Kahn and Eric Vannetta.
In singles play, the Spartans swept the top four spots in straight-sets. Sophomore Will Drougas (Roanoke, Va./Salem) at No. 1, and senior Kyle Gerber (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) at No. 2 were each winners by scores of 6-2, 6-4.
In the third position, freshman Christopher Krimbill (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) picked up a 6-2, 6-1 decision, while junior Eric Klawitter (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
Following tomorrow's match with UWW, the Spartans battle a third-straight nationally-ranked team in University Athletic Association rival No. 4 Washington University-St. Louis on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 9:00 a.m.
