GAMBIER, Ohio – Sophomore Will Drougas (Roanoke, Va./Salem) won an all Spartan final in the Flight A singles bracket as the Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team continued its 2012 fall season at the two-day Kenyon College Invitational that took place on Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16 at the Jasper Tennis Center.
Highlighting the weekend was the play of Drougas and freshman Christopher Krimbill (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain), who each advanced to the final of a Flight A singles bracket that featured four Spartans.
Krimbill defeated Casey Cempre from Denison University as well as C.J. Willams and Wade Heerboth from Kenyon in straight sets to advance to the final.
Drougas defeated Matt Nelson from Emory & Henry College (Va.) in straight sets to open the weekend. The reigning University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year then won twice in three sets versus a duo from Kenyon in Kevin Ye and Paul Bergin, ranked No. 11 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings. In the final, Drougas and Krimbill endured a three-set marathon with Drougas coming out on top via scores of 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Also winning a flight during singles action was freshman Samuel Shi (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon). Shi defeated Walsh University's Christian McCauley and Daniel Conroy from Allegheny College (Pa.) in straight sets before besting The College of Wooster's Milo Sauman by tallies of 6-1, 4-6 and 10-7 in the final.
In doubles action, the duo of seniors Alex Solove (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and Richard Brunsting (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) advanced to the Flight A semifinals with a pair of 8-5 victories before having to withdraw due to injury. In the bottom portion of that bracket, the tandem of junior John Healey (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and senior Kyle Gerber (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) also worked its way to the semis before falling to Ye and Burgin from Kenyon. Also of note, junior Eric Klawitter (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) and Krimbill won their first match, lost the second, but eventually battled back to finish fifth.
The Flight B doubles bracket also saw the duo of junior Derek Reinbold (Carmel, Ind./Park Tudor) and Shi finish fifth with a thrilling 9-8 (5) victory versus freshmen teammates Louis Stuerke (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) and Santiago Guerra (Midland, Mich./Herbert Henry Dow).
The Spartans return to action at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana on Sept. 21-24.
