Spartans Enjoy Successful Weekend at USTA/ITA Regionals in Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team spent the weekend competing at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at Kalamazoo College (MI) and compiled a 31-17 team record, including an 11-5 mark in doubles play over the course of the three day (Friday-Saturday, September 24-26)  tournament. The Spartans saw two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals and another reach the semifinals for the first time in program history.

The doubles duo of sophomore Nicolas Howe (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) and freshman John Healey (Columbia, MD/Atholton) had a banner weekend for Case, putting up a 4-1 match record to reach the semifinal round of the main draw before dropping a close 8-5 match to Andrew Kahn and Noah Swiler from DePauw University (IN). Junior Sean Carr (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Kyle Gerber (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) also charged through to the quarters with three straight wins in the main draw, but lost their bid to move on to the semis against the bracket's eventual champions, Brian Piotrowski and Brian Sorich, from Illinois Wesleyan University.

In the Collegiate Championship draw, freshmen Eric Klawitter (Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) and Trent Searfoss (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson) were the third Spartans to qualify for the quarterfinals, going 3-1 overall until falling to the eventual champions from DePauw.

Over three days of competition, the Spartans competed with the likes of Greenville College (IL), Calvin College (MI), DePauw, Washington University (MO), the University of Chicago, Denison University, Kalamazoo, Transylvania University (KY), Elmhurst College (IL), Principia College (IL), Wittenberg University, Illinois Wesleyan, Kenyon College, North Central State College, Hanover College, Albion College (MI), Augustana College (IL), Westminster College(PA), Earlham College (IN), Hope College (MI) and Ohio Northern University.

Gerber rebounded from a first-round loss to take four wins in the main draw consolation bracket, while Four Spartans also sported 2-1 singles records during the tournament. The team returns to action at the University of Toledo Invitational on Friday-Sunday, October 1-3, at the UT Varsity Courts.
