KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team picked up a pair of dual match wins on Saturday, February 26 against Hope College (MI) and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on the campus of Kalamazoo College (MI). The Spartans swept Hope 9-0 before defeating the 23rd-ranked Warhawks in a tight one, 5-4, at the Markin Racquet Center. The Spartans improved to 3-3 overall on the season with the wins.
Case picked up all six singles points without dropping a set to Hope, beginning with freshman John Healey's (Columbia, MD/Atholton) win at first singles over Alex Hughes by a score of 6-2, 6-2. At the two spot, junior Sean Carr (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) blanked Jon Lautz 6-0, 6-0 to increase the Case lead.
Carr's classmate Rohan Patel (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) was a winner at third singles against Parker Bussies, 6-2, 6-1. In the fourth slot, sophomore Kyle Gerber (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) defeated Gabe Casher 6-0, 6-1 and at fifth singles, sophomore Richard Brunsting (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) took down Kevin Hagan 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Eric Klawitter (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hershey) also swept at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1, versus Davis Vanderveen.
The Spartans also picked up all three doubles points, as Healey and Patel took an 8-6 decision over Alex Hughes and Casher. Gerber and sophomore Nicolas Howe (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) also scored a win at second doubles, 8-1, over Lautz and Bussies. Carr and Brunsting rounded out the win with an 8-0 decision over Brad Boelkins and Vanderveen.
In the afternoon matchup against Whitewater, Healey became a two-time singles winner on the day, defeating Andrew Baylliss 6-3, 7-6 (0). Patelalso went undefeated on Saturday, winning over UW-W's Byron Balkin, 6-0, 6-4. Gerber picked up a second win at fourth singles over Mitch Osborne 6-1, 6-1 and Klawitter's second win of the day proved to be pivotal as he picked up the point at sixth singles, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, over Will Krieger.
In doubles, Patel and Brunsting were able to grab another point for the Spartans with a 9-8 (4-0) win at third doubles over Erik Scanlan and Charlie Miller.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 27) against Kalamazoo at 10:00 a.m.
