WALTHAM, Mass. – The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team fell 9-0 to third-seeded and No. 5 nationally-ranked Washington University (MO) in its first match at the 2011 University Athletic Association Championship on Friday, April 15 at the Joseph F. and Clara Ford Athletic and Recreation Complex outdoor tennis courts. With the loss, the Spartans dropped to 10-8 in dual match play and 3-4 against top-30 competition.
Case, the tournament's sixth-seed, will play tomorrow (Saturday, April 16) at 9:00 a.m. against New York University (NY) in the consolation semifinals.
The Spartans fell behind 3-0 early after dropping all three doubles matches, and were also swept in singles play. Three matches went to third set tie-breakers, but the Spartans were ultimately beaten in contests at first, second and sixth singles. Freshman John Healey (Columbia, MD/Atholton) dropped a heart breaker at the two spot, 6-1, 1-6, 4-6 and sophomore Richard Brunsting (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) also lost a tight one at sixth singles, 7-6, 1-6, 7-10.
