CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's tennis teams both picked up wins against Adrian College (MI) on Friday, March 18 at the Carlton Courts. The Spartan men beat the Bulldogs by a 9-0 decision, while the women won by a score of 8-1.
It was a second straight win for the Spartan women, who improved to 6-4 overall on the season. The men, ranked No. 21 nationally, moved to 5-6 on the year and snapped a three-match losing streak in the process.
On the women's side, Case took control of the match right away, receiving shutout efforts by its first two doubles teams. Sophomore Erika Lim (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton Union) and classmate Emily Pham (Mason, OH/William Mason) were 8-0 winners at first doubles, and were followed at the two spot by another 8-0 performance by freshman Kara Richardson (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame).
Lim and Pham also dispatched their singles opponents by identical 6-1, 6-1 ledgers, as the Spartans grabbed all six singles points. Richardson was a winner in the three hole, picking up a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Adrian's Shannon Woods. At the fourth slot, freshman Bianca Patel (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) beat Sarah Kean 6-3, 6-1 and classmate Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) followed with a 6-0, 3-6, 10-6 victory. In the final match, freshman Evelyn Qi (Tampa, FL/C. Leon King) also won in a three-setter by a score of 6-0, 4-6, 10-7.
Competing simultaneously, the Spartan men swept all three doubles points from the Bulldogs. Freshman Ben McClarren (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson) and classmate John Healey (Columbia, MD/Atholton) picked up an 8-1 win at first doubles, while sophomore Richard Brunsting (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) and freshman Eric Klawitter (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hershey) were winners over Anthony Honeywell and Dominic Merollis by the same score at the two spot. Junior Rohan Patel (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) and freshman Derek Reinbold (Carmel, IN/Park Tudor School) took the final doubles point, 8-2
In singles play, junior Sean Carr (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) led off with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win over David Blaker. He was followed by sophomore Nicolas Howe (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights), who notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cameron Hamilton. At the three, freshman Ryan Haines (Flower Mound, TX/Flower Mound) swept Honeywell 6-0, 6-0 and Reinbold lost just one point in a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles. Sophomore Alex Solove (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty) took his match at fifth singles by a score of 6-2, 6-2 as freshman Trent Searfoss (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson) sealed the shutout with a 6-0, 6-1 win to close out the match.
Next up for the men is a road matchup with Ohio Dominican University on Friday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m. The Spartan women will visit Oberlin College tomorrow (Saturday, March 18) with first serve schedule for 10:00 a.m.
