The Case Western Reserve University women's swimming and diving team picked up two wins on Saturday at home, defeating Ohio Northern University 220-35 and Hillsdale College 169.5-92.5, while the men's swimming and diving team beat Ohio Northern University 225-64. With the wins, the women improve to 6-2 in dual meets, while the men improve to 5-2.
The women claimed 11 of the 14 events in the Veale Natatorium, including sweeping both relays. The 400-yard medley relay team of junior Caitlyn VonFeldt and sophomores Kelly Moton, Anna Smith, and Sarah Krueger finished in 4:02.01. VonFeldt and Krueger teamed up with sophomore Daniella Rupert and first-year Maria Pritchett to win the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.48.
Individually, Moton won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events with times of 1:09.10 and 2:30.51, respectively. Krueger added wins in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, coming in at 24.74 and 54.64 in the respective events. With a time of 59.72, VonFeldt added a win in the 100-yard backstroke. In the 100-yard butterfly, Pritchett won with a time of 59.58, barely beating Smith by 0.31 seconds. First-year Abby Halsdorfer won the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events, with times of 1:56.88 and 5:13.77, respectively. Senior Julia Ver Voort picked up a win in the 200 individual medley race, finishing with a time of 2:15.79.
The men emerged victorious in 14 of the 16 events, with a sweep of both the relay and divining events. Junior Cassiel Yuzik swept the diving events, scoring 244.65 points at the one-meter dive and 243.97 points at the three-meter dive. The first-year relay team of Connor Chignell, Patrick Cavanaugh, Anatole Borisov, and Andrew Smith won the 400-yard medley relay event, finishing with a time of 3:33.65. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Smith teamed up with sophomores Calvin Tecson, Ryan Gilbert, and Neil Wible to win with a time of 1:26.28.
Borisov won the 50-yard freestyle race, coming in at 22.19, while Wible added a victory in the 100-yard freestyle race, finishing at 48.62. Sophomore Kelvin Tay picked up wins in two events, the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke, winning with times of 53.97 and 1:55.67, respectively. The Spartan men swept the two butterfly events, with sophomores Nicholas Schoenig (52.83) and Michael Clough (1:57.03) winning the 100-yard and 200-yard events, respectively. In the individual freestyle events, first-year Justin Christensen won the 1000-yard event with a time of 10:14.52, and sophomore Will Backer won the 500-yard event with a time of 4:56.94. Finishing at 2:12.82 in the 200-yard breaststroke was junior Sean Twomey, who won the event by 1.08 seconds. Junior Kyle Barclay wrapped up the individual Spartan winners, claiming the 200-yard IM event with a time of 1:59.36.
The Spartans will be back in the pool on Saturday, February 1 when the teams host Baldwin Wallace in the Veale Natatorium in the last tune-up before the University Athletic Association Championships. The dual meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
