Case Western Reserve University junior Caitlyn VonFeldt recorded a NCAA 'B' cut time in the 100-yard backstroke, while the men's 200-yard medley relay team broke a school record during the second day of competition at the Wooster Invitational, as both the men's and women's squads sit in first place at the meet.
The women have scored 1,378.5 points through the two days to lead second-place Wooster (978.5) and third-place Edinboro (965.5). The men have totaled 1,700 points to lead second-place Mount Union (993) and third-place Ohio Northern (703.5). A total of seven women's teams and six men's teams are in action at the meet.
VonFeldt paced the squad in the 100-yard backstroke, winning the event with a 'B' cut time of 56.30. Sophomore Anna Smith finished right behind VonFeldt with a time of 58.50, while junior Olivia Love placed sixth (1:01.31) and sophomore Jackie Ngu finished seventh (1:01.45 in the prelims).
The Spartans also had first-place finishes in both the men's relays during the second day of the meet, with junior Andrew Duffield, junior Will McDonald, sophomore Calvin Tecson and first-year Anatole Borisov finishing first in the 200-yard medley relay with a school-record time of 1:32.35, besting the previous record of 1:32.98 set during the 2013 UAA Championships. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Nicholas Schoenig, sophomore Will Backer, sophomore Neil Wible and first-year Andrew Smith then added a first-place with a time of 6:59.12.
The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Daniella Rupert, sophomore Sarah Krueger, first-year Maria Pritchett and first-year Abby Halsdorfer won the event with a time of 7:51.46. In addition, the 200-yard medley relay team of VonFeldt, Anna Smith, Krueger and sophomore Kelly Moton finished second in the event with a time of 1:46.52.
The Spartan women were also particularly strong in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing with six 'A' final finishers. The 400-yard IM 'A' final finishers were Pritchett (first, 4:33.00), Halsdorfer (second, 4:35.31), senior Olivia Picchione (fourth, 4:47.33), senior Sarah Taekman (fifth, 4:47.39 in the prelims), sophomore C.J. Hill (seventh, 4:50.83) and senior Julia Ver Voort (eighth, 4:49.36 in the prelims).
Other 'A' final finishers for the Spartan women on Friday included Anna Smith (first, 57.63), senior Rhiannon Reese (fourth, 59.74) and first-year Laila Michel (seventh, 1:00.76 in the prelims) in the 100-yard butterfly, Krueger (first, 1:56.67) and Rupert (second, 1:58.13 in the prelims) in the 200-yard freestyle, and Moton (third, 1:06.89 in the prelims) and Taekman (seventh, 1:08.70 in the prelims) in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Hailey Seibert finished third in the women's one-meter dive with a score of 355.72.
The Spartan men were particularly strong in both the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with five 'A' final finishers in both the 400-yard IM and the 100-yard back. The 400-yard IM 'A' final finishers were sophomore Ryan Gorman (first, 4:07.55), junior Sean Twomey (second, 4:07.83), junior Kyle Barclay (fourth, 4:11.30), first-year Justin Christensen (seventh, 4:13.77) and senior A.J. Quinn (eighth, 4:14.33 in the prelims). The 100-yard back 'A' final finishers were Nicholas Schoenig (first, 51.55), sophomore Ryan Gilbert (third, 51.98), McDonald (fourth, 52.01), first-year Connor Chignell (sixth, 52.65) and junior Dakota Weinman (seventh, 53.20).
Other 'A' final finishers for the Spartan men on Friday included Borisov (third, 50.94), junior Jakob Woerner (fifth, 52.06), Tecson (sixth, 51.94 in the prelims) and sophomore Michael Clough (seventh, 51.72 in the prelims) in the 100-yard butterfly, Wible (first, 1:41.77), Andrew Smith (second, 1:43.10), Backer (fourth, 1:46.18) and first-year Xander Guerrero (seventh, 1:46.89) in the 200-yard freestyle, and first-year Patrick Cavanaugh (second, 57.82 in the prelims), Duffield (sixth, 59.27), first-year Will Bryant (seventh, 59.57) and Quinn (eighth, 59.32 in the prelims).
Junior Cassiel Yuzik finished third in the men's three-meter dive with a score of 423.10.
Action at the Wooster Invitational will conclude on Saturday, with the preliminaries starting at 10:00 a.m., and finals at 5:00 p.m.
